Port au Prince, Haiti
Favela Street Haiti launched in 2015 as a collaboration with local partner Sakala, which provides a safe space where young people come together to play, learn and grow. We started working with 20 young men and women from Cité Soleil, one of the largest and most notorious impoverished areas in the Caribbean.
The programme ran from 2015 to 2017, during which time the group worked on personal goals and organised street football activities in different parts of Port au Prince. In the final phase of the programme, they independently organised the Cité Soleil Peace Prize street football tournament for boys and girls. In the annual lead-up to the final, they also ran pre-tournaments in different neighbourhoods of Cité Soleil, not only offering kids the opportunity to play, but also using football as a tool for building peace.
